The current Ongoing Formation provision for priests in the Diocese is a natural development of the Ministry to Priests programme - which ran from 1986 to 1997.  This programme provided an excellent foundation for the current Ongoing Formation provision, and a debt is owed to all those involved in he former Ministry to Priests programme. 

In 1997, following consultation with the priests of the Diocese, through the Deaneries and the Council of Priests - and in the light of Pastores Dabo Vobis (1992) and the Directory on the Ministry and Life of Priests (1994) - the Archbishop appointed a committee in order to establish a new provision for priestly Ongoing Formation.

• The Mission Statement for the Ongoing Formation of Priests Committee remains that formulated by the Ministry to Priests team in November 1989:

Our purpose is to work with each other and with the Archbishop in the pastoral care of the presbyterate, to advance priestly brotherhood and the personal growth of ourselves and all our priests in the service and mission of the Church

• It is recognised that Ongoing Formation is primarily the responsibility of the individual priest - and embraces the human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral areas of his life and ministry.  The Ongoing Formation Committee is both reactive and proactive in assisting the presbyterate in meeting these needs.
