THE OLDEST STORY IN THE WORLD

The Epic of Gilgamesh

We look at the oldest extant story in the world, the Epic of Gilgamesh, which dates back to 2,500BC. We look at the movement of the narrative where the hero is revealed through how he faces tension, opposition and conflict. Will he manage to reach his goal? This ancient narrative structure is used in all four Gospels, as the evangelists unfold the story of Jesus.

We look particularly at the earliest Gospel - Mark - to see how it reveals the person of Jesus through how he faces conflict with a variety of people and groups.

We look at the passion narrative, the oldest and longest narrative about Jesus, which celebrates Jesus’s final conflict, and his great fidelity to his mission.
